Created in the early 1970s, the highest resort in Europe offers a haven of peace and sport in the midst of the mountains. Known as being the world's largest ski area, the Three Valleys, with Val Thorens at the top, offers an extraordinary playground. You can ski on the Maurienne side to make the most of the sunshine in January, or head over to Méribel for the huge open spaces of Mont Vallon. Why not ask a guide to take you along the magnificent Lac du Lou route, or even hike up the Péclet glacier. Are you a good skier? Then try out the western side of Péclet as the sun goes down. A moment to remember! Take time to watch the sun rise from your window: see how it tints the winter sky pink, lighting up all the surrounding summits.
The high altitude of the resort means guaranteed snow. All that's left for you to do is choose when to come and enjoy the mountains: December or January to satisfy your thirst for skiing on fresh powder, February or March for milder temperatures and soft snow, or April or May for springtime skiing on melting snow.
Val-Thorens is, first and foremost, a resort for skiers, but there are slopes for all kinds of winter fun: sledging (and not just for children!), ski touring and free touring, the zip wire between two peaks (don't miss this!), snowshoes, paragliding and, if the weather is really being uncooperative, you can swim and play ball sports at the sports centre.
The resort has developed a quality offer of accommodation and restaurants, demonstrated by the number of star-studded hotels and chalets, and the unique example of this high-flying chef: Jean Sulpice, with two Michelin stars proudly fixed to his toque, is the world's highest gourmet chef! He keeps a quality table at this height, even taking care of school canteen meals... and leaves his kitchen for the slopes whenever he can. You have been warned: in Val Thorens, we take the mountains seriously!
